Mundesley WI was founded in 1922, not many years after the first WI in the UK met in Anglesey, North Wales in 1915. The centenary of the Wl was celebrated in 2015. When you join the WI you become part of not only a local group, but a much bigger national organisation. The Wl is the largest voluntary women's group in the UK, with over 211,000 members in some 6,200 Institutes located in England, Wales, the Channel lslands and the Isle of Man. It is non-sectarian and non-party political and aims to provide a democratically controlled educational and social organisation for women, offering quality of life in the community and enabling them to develop their own skills and talents: not just "Jam and Jerusalem" but also education and entertainment, cake and campaigning.
Our meetings take place in the Church Rooms, Mundesley, on the second Monday of the month, starting at 7 pm. We have a mixture of speakers, craft evenings, discussions and entertainment, and also organise outings locally to such places as Gressenhall and the Theatre Royal. We have a New Year lunch in January.
We belong to the Paston Group of local Wl's which meets in North Walsham twice a year. We are also in a darts league. We send representatives to County and National meetings and vote each year on a Resolution to be debated at the National AGM. These Resolutions are matters of national interest such as organ donation, care not custody and save the honey bee. We support local charities and the food bank and also the ACWW (Associated Countrywomen of the World) which works to raise the standard of living of rural women and promote international friendship.
We are a friendly group of women from Mundesley and surrounding villages and welcome visitors and new members. Our meetings are advertised in the local press and on the notice board opposite the Lifeboat charity shop in the centre of the village.
